ECHIGO BREWERY - Japan’s First Micro Beer Brewery

After the of amendment the Liquor Tax Act in 1994, regulations on microbreweries were eased, Echigo Beer Co. obtained their craft beer manufacturing license soon after and became the first craft brewery in Japan.

The brewery is located in Niigata prefecture, the rice growing capital of Japan and home to the super-premium Koshihikari rice, a short grain rice regarded as the best rice in all of Japan. The brewery holds the high standards when selecting the Koshihikari rice, to assure the exquisite flavor outcome. Using 100% malt and nongenetically-modified beer yeast, Echigo Beer Co. produces a high quality beer that cannot be imitated.

The first Japanese craft imported from Japan, and the No. 1 Selling Japanese Craft Beer in America, Echigo Koshihikari Beer is the flagship brand of Echigo Brewery, is a rice style lager with 5% alcohol. While the malt ingredient is imported from Europe, the rice is harvested literally from the backyard of Echigo Brewery. Though this beer is categorized as being dry, the brewery uses the time-consuming German decoction method to accentuate the underlying natural sweet flavors from the Koshihikari rice, to appeal to non-dry beer drinkers. The beer has a crip and refreshing flavor, and exceptionally soothing and smooth quality. The sweet aroma of rice, and eloquent fragrance of hops, make it the perfect complement to any Japanese dish, especially sushi.

The first genuine stout brewed in Japan, Echigo Stout is made with 100% malt and aims to match up to authentic Irish stouts. This is a micro-brewed premium dark beer with a coloring similar to coffee, a savory aroma extracted from roasted malt, and a fruity fragrance produced by ale yeast. Echigo Stout is brewed with a blend of seven different types of malts and 1.3 times more malt compared to regular beers. This creates depth in its flavor and a perfect balance of sweet malt with fresh, bitter hops. While other beers usually take about 28 days, the manufacturing process for Echigo Stout takes roughly 45 to 90 days, which gives the beer its mellow quality.

This premium ale, characterized by its beautiful shade of deep red color, is both complex and refreshing. It has refined aroma, balanced between bitter and sweet. Echigo Premium Red Ale is very easy to enjoy for everyone, even those who usually drink light beers. It is brewed using a carefully selected Amarillo hops for a pungent citrus nose, a sleek medium body and a noticeable bitterness. The beautiful crane design is representative of the Japanese culture and culinary style that influenced this beer.
